SHAUN TREAT
The end of January means two things: We’re maybe almost getting the hang of writing down the correct year by now, and also the amazing Denton Black Film Festival returns to downtown!
As if that ain’t enough action, here’s a look at our top #DEN10 events to check out as you’re out and about.
THURSDAY, January 25TH
Texas House 64 Democratic Debate | UNT Lyceum | 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Denton politics ain’t never boring, which is why you should check out the Democratic contenders for District 64 Andrew Morris and Matt Pruneda as they debate on the issues to see who challenges Representative Lynn Stucky! But hey, if politics ain’t your thing, then you can meet some Star Wars celebrities visiting Madness Games from 5-8pm. Say hi to the Luggabeast.
Uncorked Comedy Show | Wine Squared | 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Denton comics turn out to help LOL for a Cause raise funds for children’s literacy in what promises to be a fun-filled evening of wine-fueled wackiness. Thursdays are also always poppin’ with Glitterbomb at Andy’s, a bicycle ride at Eastside, or jazz at Steve’s Wine Bar, so no shortage of things to do and see.
FRIDAY, January 26TH
Denton Black Film Festival | Downtown Denton | 1/25 – 1/28
It kicks off on Thursday and goes through Sunday, but this year’s DBFF is a four day extravaganza of filmmakers, panels, workshops, comedy, poetry, and oh yeah did we mention films!? You can peruse their events line-up, which includes a Friday night Poetry Slam at the GDAC, and be sure to go check out the Freeman Town 2.0 exhibition at UNT On The Square!
Josh T. Pearson with Danny Diamonds & Claire Morales | Dan’s SilverLeaf | 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Enjoy another enchanting evening of musical delights at Dans, with Josh T. Pearson of Lyft To Experience headlining this toe-tapping showcase.
Bear and the Beasts, RTB2 | Harvest House | 8:00 PM - 11:55 PM
Go hear some eclectic tunes in one of Denton’s best outdoor venues.
SATURDAY, January 27TH
Bees. Beer & Botanical Gardens | Denton County Brewing Company | 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM
We love us some Saturday Jazz Brunch at The Chestnut Tree after some Yoga On The Square, but DCBC is hosting a public meet-n-greet on their pseudo-secret mission with the Rowdy Bees to create a community garden! Hear about the project and how you can pitch in, then head back to hear the Denton Tarantinos at 9pm!
A Musical Journey with Frank McComb | Patterson-Appleton Arts Center | 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM
Experience the internationally acclaimed musician whose combination of R&B, smooth jazz, and gospel has made him a highly sought-after performer in venues around the world!
KUZU Dimensions | Andy’s Bar | 8:00 PM - 2:00 AM
The lil’ community radio station that could KUZU 92.9FM is taking over all floors of the Paschall Building with live performances, video art, magic, DJs, and dancing in this eclectic all-night event.
Bluegrass Skate Night | Lone Star Indoor Sports | 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Rollerskating to the sounds of Blue Grass Fire Band? Observe and report, y’all.
SUNDAY, January 28TH
Elk River Sessions Revisited | Dan’s Silver Leaf | 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Catfish’s krewe of musical maniacs reunites for an afternoon of shenanigans to raise funds for a friend’s medical expenses. This will be the last live show before their Elk River Sessions documentary debuts during the Thin Line Film Fest, so go grab some vinyl before its gone.
